Impacted Canines

The canine teeth are important to the alignment of the bite as well as chewing function. Since canine teeth are prone to impaction, treatment includes the coordinated effort of an oral surgeon and an orthodontist. At Westwood Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, Dr. Seeger, Dr. Gleason, and Dr. Inverso are board-certified oral surgeons who can treat impacted canine teeth through a procedure called expose and bond. Contact us to schedule a consultation.

What Is an Impacted Canine Tooth?

An impacted tooth occurs when a tooth is trapped beneath the gums and cannot erupt into the dental arch. Canine teeth are very susceptible to impaction. Impaction may be suspected if a canine tooth has not erupted during the early teenage years, and/or the baby tooth is still in place. Your general dentist can diagnose an impacted canine tooth with X-rays during regular dental checkups.

If you suspect your child has an impacted canine tooth, or if your child has been diagnosed with an impacted canine tooth from their dentist, please contact our office for a consultation.

Expose and Bond Treatment

Any oral surgery procedure involves a consultation to discuss your condition, perform a comprehensive oral evaluation, and create a treatment plan designed to give you an optimal outcome. We will review your treatment in detail with you and answer any questions you may have about the process.

Treatment for an impacted canine tooth requires teamwork between your oral surgeon and your orthodontist. Your oral surgeon will surgically expose the impacted tooth and attach a bracket with a chain to it. Your orthodontist will use this chain to gently guide the impacted canine into place.

At our practice, we offer many different types of anesthesia to ensure your comfort. We will discuss the type of anesthesia for your procedure during your consultation.
