Bone Grafting

Solution to Bone Loss & Preparation for Dental Implants

Bone loss in the face and jaw can arise from congenital defects, facial trauma, or missing teeth. Our board-certified oral surgeons, Drs. Seeger, Gleason, and Inverso are all experts who can perform many different bone grafting techniques. These techniques can be used for restoring structure and functionality to the oral and maxillofacial areas. It is common for bone grafting to be used prior to implant placement to create a strong foundation for dental implants.

Contact Westwood Oral Surgery & Dental Implants to schedule a consultation with one of our oral health specialists. If bone grafting is right for you, we will discuss your treatment options, goals, and design a custom plan for your personalized treatment.

How Does a Bone Graft Work?

In a bone graft procedure, one of our surgeons will insert bone grafting material in the area where more bone is needed.

There are numerous types of bone grafts, all made of natural or synthetic materials. The type of bone graft for your specific condition will be determined by your oral surgeon. The materials used in bone grafting include:

  • Tissue from a tissue bank (allograft)
  • Tissue from the patient's own body (autograft)
  • Animal tissue (xenograft)
  • Synthetic material (alloplast)

Bone Grafting Treatments

Your surgeon will map out a custom care plan during your first visit, which will be based on your personal needs. To assess your facial structures and identify any possible oral health concerns, we may take 3D scans of your mouth and face. It is common for patients who receive dental implants to have a bone graft procedure as well. If bone grafting is required, we will explain the bone graft procedure and what is to be expected.

At Westwood Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we offer many different types of anesthesia and sedation options to ensure your comfort during surgery. Your surgeon will help you decide the right option for you before your procedure.

Ridge Augmentation

The bone that surrounds the tooth's roots is called the alveolar ridge. Following a tooth extraction, ridge augmentation can be performed to rebuild the alveolar ridge and prepare your mouth for implant placement.

Sinus Lift

Above the upper teeth are the maxillary sinuses, which are hollow spaces around the nose. The upper teeth have some roots that extend into the sinuses. The wall that separates the floor of the sinus and the mouth is very thin, especially with tooth loss. Adding bone grafting material to the sinus floor lifts the sinus, creating sufficient bone for dental implant placement.

Socket Preservation

The surrounding bone and gums are at risk of receding after a tooth is removed. This can cause visible changes as the jaw deteriorates. To maintain the size and shape of an empty tooth socket and minimize bone loss, a socket preservation can be performed. This procedure can also make upcoming implant placement easier.

Types of Anesthesia

At Westwood Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we offer several types of anesthesia and sedation options.
